Backup power design: UPS and standby generators

Guaranteed and emergency power — UPS, rotary UPS and standby generators — for buildings that cannot switch off. From the power balance to blackout tests.

Scope

What the design covers

  • Critical load power balance and resilience class (N+1, 2N, Tier)
  • Static UPS and rotary UPS (DRUPS): rating, autonomy and configuration
  • Standby generators: sizing, single or parallel operation, location and coordination with other trades (fuel, ventilation, exhaust)
  • Automatic transfer switching between mains and generator
  • Guaranteed-power switchboards, A/B paths, protection selectivity
  • Power for server rooms, fire and voice alarm panels, medical and airport equipment
  • UPS and generator monitoring in the BMS
  • Fire safety expert approval and designer's site supervision

Why Eko Elprom

What the client gains

First rotary UPS building in Poland

ICM, University of Warsaw: 15 kV supply rated at 4 MW and two 1600 kW rotary UPS units (2013–2014).

Tier III data centre

Asseco data processing centre in Kraków: 1.4 and 1.8 MVA generators, 2 MVA UPS in two chains, 176 racks.

Hospitals

Cape of Hope clinic: 630 kVA generator with 24-hour autonomy, 160 kVA UPS for medical equipment.

Industry and airports

Hutchinson hall: generators totalling 2600 kVA; Radom air traffic control tower: 900 kVA generator, 4 × 75 kVA UPS.

Process

From first sketch to handover

One lead designer at every stage. Cross-discipline coordination, approvals with distribution system operators and utilities, presence on site.

FAQ

Client questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often when quoting this type of project.

From the power balance of the loads that must run during a mains failure, allowing for motor starting, the UPS load profile and spare capacity. The rating and configuration (single or parallel) are set at concept stage.
A rotary UPS (DRUPS) combines a kinetic energy store with a generator and needs no batteries; a static UPS with batteries is often cheaper at lower ratings.
A UPS carries the load for minutes — until the generator starts and takes over. Generator run time depends on the fuel tank, e.g. 24 hours at the Cape of Hope clinic.
Yes — for example the MON server room upgrade in Bydgoszcz. We survey switchboards and loads and phase the work to limit power interruptions.
